Copy the direct public post link

Open the post containing the animation and copy its direct status URL. A working link normally contains /status/ followed by a number. Paste it into the homepage GIF downloader. If the post exposes a GIF-style animation, the results show the looping video file that X makes available.

The file will usually end in .mp4, not .gif. That is expected. The GIF-to-MP4 explanation describes why social platforms commonly deliver short animations as video.

Save it on iPhone

In Safari, run the lookup and choose Download. The file typically appears in the Downloads folder in Files. From there, you can preview it, rename it, or move an authorized copy into another app. For a focused walkthrough, use the iPhone GIF guide.

Save it on Android

Use Chrome or another current browser, paste the public link, and download the result. Check the notification tray, browser downloads, or Files app if you do not see it immediately. The Android GIF guide includes practical permission and storage checks.

Save it on Windows or Mac

Desktop browsers usually save the MP4 into the configured Downloads folder. If your browser opens media instead, return to the result and use Download rather than Open post. Avoid installing unknown extensions for a task the browser can already complete.

If the post does not produce a result

Confirm the post is public and that the animation belongs to the original post rather than an external card. Copy the direct status URL again, temporarily disable an overly aggressive blocker, and retry. The broader download troubleshooting guide covers missing media, invalid links, and browser download restrictions.

Keep quality expectations realistic

The downloader can return only the media made available for the post. “HD” does not mean artificial upscaling. If you plan to edit or repurpose your own clip, start with the highest available variant and make platform-specific copies from that source.

Common questions

Quick answers

Why did a Twitter GIF download as MP4?

X commonly serves GIF-style animations as silent looping MP4 video because it is smaller and plays more efficiently.

Can I save the animation directly to my phone?

Yes. The browser saves the available MP4 to its normal download location; on iPhone this is commonly Files, and on Android it is commonly Downloads.
